Jakarta EE 9.1 is RELEASED!

Ok very good news Jakarta EE 9.1 is RELEASED, we now have Java11 support! That's very nice! Read more here

Java and Oracle & Google & Microsoft

So it took 10 years to make a decision about the Java fight between Oracle and Google! Read more: Supreme Court sides with Google in Oracle’s API copyright case!

Microsoft is back (more) in Java, they have now announce the preview of the Microsoft Build of OpenJDK, that's good news!

Jakarta 9.1 & Jakarta 10

Things moving faster and faster i Java nowadays. Soon we will get Jakarta EE 9.1 (Q2-2021) with support for Java 11 (latest LTS release). 

Later next year Jakarta EE 10 plan to be released about Q2-2022. Read more about this in this excellent article Java for the enterprise: What to expect in Jakarta EE 10 by Arjan Tijms.

In standard Java is also moving on, Java 16 is already released and Java 17 will be next long-term support (LTS) release, planed for Q3-202.

What about products support för Jakarta EE 9, of course it take time for products to support new releases but anyway we already have these compatible products för Jakarta EE 9.

Java 15 & Jakarta EE9

This week I join an online session about the upcoming release of Jakarta EE 9 (release date is 20 November). It is very interesting as I understand the transition  from Java EE  to Jakarta EE will be done then.

My understanding is that Jakarta EE 9 don't have any new functionality compared with Java EE8.  

Jakarta EE 10 will be that release with more functionality, I think it is planed to be released in Q3 2021.

But at this session I got the information that there will first be a Jakarta EE 9.1 release with support for Java 11.

Earlier in September I join the "Oracle Developer live-Java" session about the release of Java 15 (is a short-term release), nowadays there is a new release every 6 months. This is very good! Is is possible to watch the replays about Oracle Developer Live-Java,

Java 17 will be very interesting release because this release is a LTS release (with long time support). Today Java 11 is the latest LTS version.

Later in december there will be a Jakartaone livestream about Jakarta EE 9, I will surely join it!

I think now Java have a very bright future!

My Workflow with photos using my iPad Pro and my Mac Pro

This workflow I started to use some years ago, I use especially for my private photos on vacations or when I am out traveling in my work. I only bring my camera and my Ipad Pro, no Mac book Pro or extra NAS or disk.

My workflow:

1. First I import my photos into lightroom on my Ipad Pro. 
2. I start editing my photos & adding star rating for each photos on my iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil, this is very nice!
3. Later when I have wifi I sync my photos up to the Adobe Cloud and therefor also get a backup copy in the cloud.
4. Later when I am home at my office, my Mac Pro running lightroom classic get all photos automatic from the Adobe cloud, I have configure it to store all photos on my disk as I normally do e.g. "disk/photos/2020/10-15 and a good name".

This have improve my life a lot as I am able to editing my photos on site and adding star rating for each photos, later at home I have everything I did on my Ipad Pro also on my Mac Pro automatic and I can go on and do some more work with my photos.

Normally in my studio I am not using this workflow as it take too long time. Instead I the use my Mac Pro and lightroom classic and skip to use the ipad Pro.

Upgrade to the new version of Google Sites

I have now upgraded my company home pages www.ojn.se to the the new Google Sites. It was really time to do something anyway, last time I did an update was 2013! 

I now take a further step into the cloud

Now I have bought myself a Samsung Chromebook 3G with Google Chrome OS & is now taking another step into the cloud

upgrade to an iPad 3

I decided finally to upgrade my iPad1 and buy myself a new iPad3. I had actually intended to buy me an android tablet but realized that iPad3 truly in a class by itself. What attracted me to buy the new iPad3 is its excellent screen, it's something I appreciate because I read a lot books on my iPad. I will very likely also buy myself a Android tablet, but with a smaller screen of 7 inches. I'm actually much more interested in Android because it is against that platform that I committed to developing mobile applications. But now I bought me a Apple product again :-)

Redesign my website & moved it to the "cloud" with Google Sites

A new website (www.ojn.se) for my company OJN Data AB is in progress since a week back. Work on new website is not quite clear yet, but since yesterday it's on display in public.

I've now also moved my website to "cloud" with the help of Google Sites. I have also a few years back replaced my email-server for the ojn.se domain with the "cloud" with the help of Google Apps. Now my server at home/office don't do so much.

My son Axel Nordstrom (15 years old) is the person responsible for the graphics but is not quite finished with their work yet. My thought was that he could learn a little HTML in their weekly holidays from school. Right now you can compare my new website (www.ojn.se) with the old website (old.ojn.se).

I'm really happy to build the website with Google Sites, it has worked quite smoothly and has not been so difficult to get started. My last website I built by hand using only a text editor, that's why it looks so miserably bad.

The site has now become mobile custom, which is in line with OJN Data's strategy of focusing on mobility, the support was also included in Google Sites.

Waiting for the updated for my Nokia N9 to PR1.1

I bought the N9 only one week ago and will soon get next update already!!

I have a great device, the Nokia N9 MeeGo/Harmattan

I have now bought the N9 and I am planning to keep it for the next few years. I hope Nokia announces something new for MeeGo/Harmattan or Meltemi that I can move on to after the N9 or Apple will be taking my money. Windows Phone is not an option for me.

I prefer N9 compare with Nokia Lumia 800, because N9 have NFC and front facing camera. And, being Linux-based, can run Android apps (I only hope the software will be released, but I don't know?). N9 is also the true Open Source phone, with a open source development tool, Qt/c++.

Listen to your customers Nokia. Let them decide which one they prefer by making both available (N9 & Lumia 800) in the market. I really love the N9 phone, I have only had for some days but think it is so great!
I have also manage to synchronize all the calendars from google, I found this instructions HowTo to synchronize all the calendars from google to the Nokia N9, many Thanks!!

The last phone I loved was Nokia N900, I have waiting two years for the next step, the N9!
Now I will start developing some great apps for the phone!!

Nokia World 2011; Recap

I thought I ought to sum up the Nokia World 2011 conference.

Overall the conference was a not so good this time if you compare with Nokia Developer Summit 2009 in Monaco or the last years Nokia World 2010 & Nokia Developer Summit 2010. It was not so much for developer at all, but any way I took the opportunity to go on the only developer training course at this event "Nokia with windows phone training", I think it was interesting to learn more about that platform but I want more!, more more about developing for all Nokia's different platform like Symbian/MeeGo/Qt/JavaME.

I think the Nokia World is a very interesting event to go to any way, it is a pity that Nokia does not offer something for Qt developers?! I found one very interesting news about Qt, in the last session Mr. Elop said "Qt is our primary vehicle to reach the next billion" — I must say, this is very very interesting!" I would like to hear more about this in the future!

I also would like to hear more about MeeGo and if/what is coming in the future, but Nokia choose to not speak about it at all. I found it very very strange, when Nokia as a matter of fact have release this big sale success, the Nokia N9. I am very disappointed about that!

Conclusions:
- I was thinking Qt Developer Days would perhaps have been better event to go on, instead of NokiaWorld.
- Overall the conference was not a good one, not for a Qt/developer. Sadly I left it with a disappointed feeling. The good thing was a updated address book with those new contacts and new friends.
- I took the opportunity to go on the only training course "Nokia with windows phone training", it was interesting to learn more about that platform, so it was good thing, but I not sure if Nokia will convince so many Qt/Java developer to start develop for this platform, I think they more likely will go for Android.
- I still plan to learn more about Qt, it look like it will be important in the future for mobile application development for the Symbian, MeeGo and "the next billion(S40/linux)" platform (rumours says that).
- I have also decided to start learning Android development, the main reason for that is "I really don't think I could trust Nokia any longer, perhaps will they also change there mind again about Qt? and I don't think Qt developers are so important for Nokia any longer!"
- I don't understand who want to buy a Nokia Lumia 800 when you have Nokia N9? I am serious about this issue? I will at least buy me a Nokia N9 that's for sure!

Nokia world 2011 for a Nokia MeeGo developer

Now I am on my flight to London and wondering if Nokia World 2011 will give me and others Meego fans any good news at all or will this conference only be about wp7?

This year I am not pleased with this Nokia World & what I will get as a developer, I think it was a bad decision not also have a Nokia developer summit together with Nokia World like last year. Nokia also promise Nokia Launchpad members a free Nokia Developer Summit this year but no they change it to a only Nokia World event, this really bad I think!

I really would like to see a new cool "linux device" or at least get Nokia's plan about the future about MeeGo/Qt? Otherwise nokia would leave the non-wp7 crowd in the cold!

It not enough to say "Qt is a strategic investment for us, today and in the future" Marco Argenti, Nokia. #QtDD11 keynote. I would like to hear a lot more....

I have also plan to decide after Nokia World if I will go for Android & drop MeeGo/Harmattan or go for both. I can say I would like to hear any good news from Nokia about the future for non-wp7 developers like me.

The strategic decision by Nokia to nearly kill Symbian and MeeGo before they have something to show us was not so very clever I think, nearly very stupid!

I also think that one good thing for Nokia with Symbian and Meego is that Nokia control it completely like Apple do with IOS, control both hardware and software will be very important in the future I believe. Why throw away that benefit?
Without own platform for next generation devices I don't see any chance for Nokia to survive. Nokia need MeeGo and Symbian I believe!! I hope they change the strategic decision very soon, why not to day? so Nokia go for MeeGo also.... I believe is more right decision for the future!

Now I am in London very soon, landing in 10 minutes. Now I am getting ready for Nokia World tomorrow. I really hope for good news tomorrow, that is true because I am still a Nokia fan as you perhaps know?

Now it is morning and I haven't been able to post this blog post yet, but now I have arrive to Nokia World 2011 and keynote will start about 20 minutes, I hope for good MeeGo news!!

JavaOne and Oracle Develop 2011; Recap JavaSE/JavaME/JavaEE

I thought I ought to sum up this year’s JavaOne2011 conference. It has been an intense week as always. This was the 10th time I’ve gone to JavaOne.

What could you say about this conference?
I am glad I really went on this year JavaOne, it was a much better JavaOne conference compared with the last year conference. :-)

This year it was not so much about JavaME, I think/I hope Oracle will take care of that during next year. Oracle announces plans to evolve the Java ME Platform and align Java ME with Java SE 7. I look very interesting but....all political things have to sort up first with all other companies involved in JavaME. But I believe Oracle are able to fix it!!

Some of the hot topics at this JavaOne:
- A JavaFX 2.0 & also a preview for Mac OS X available
- A JDK 7 for Mac OS X Developer Preview is now available, with full developer and consumer releases planned for 2012.
- NetBeans 7.1 Beta is now available, with JavaFX 2.0 support
- JavaSDK 7 and the planned version 8 (2013).
- JavaME and Nokia S40, I went to a session about this topic and it was very interesting to learn more about it. I plan to go to (26/10-27/10) Nokia World 2011 and hope to get more information from Nokia about JavaME, Qt & MeeGo

Conclusions:
- I am very excited about Java FX 2.0 & JavaSE7, I plan to learn more about it.
- I was very very nice with the Mac OS X support for JDK 7 and JavaFX
- I hope Oracle will be able to bringing Java ME back to the mainstream platform again, perhaps next year.
- Oracle is committed to JavaME and but must now starting handling the unhealthy business mess in JavaME to be able to take JavaME forward.

Develop for MeeGo, Android or WebOS is the big question for me

Yesterday I told you on twitter (@ovjo12):
"Ok now I have had look on both #webos and #Android and found out that I believe right thing is to develop for #MeeGo"
"Must say nothing wrong with #webos or #android, I believe more in #meego now, but I could change my mind, lets see what Nokia do after #n9"

The background:
Some year's ago I took a decision to learn something else than JavaME because it was obvious that it was not enough with knowledge of JavaME because more and more mobile platforms didn't support Java. This was really pity because I love the idea of "write once run everywhere". I then decided to start learn more about Qt because Nokia told me this is the future, then you are able to easily write apps to both the Symbian platform and to the Maemo/MeeGo platform. That's sounds very nice until Nokia in februari 2011 change the strategy and change platform from MeeGo to MS Windows for high end mobiles. I was very angry.....!!

The status now:
So far I have learned more about developing for the WebOs platform and the Android platform, I don't know so much about it yet but I know more...than before. The obvious choose for me is Android because I am a Java guy. But it is not easy to choose and it is not easy to learn all of them!

The conclusion:
I think is all about which company that can produce the best hardware and software, I agree with this "I believe you have to follow the market, and the consumers own it." as danielcarlberg told me on twitter yesterday.

Today I own an Apple iPad and I love it, both because of the the hardware and the build in software and apps. I would love to replace it with an Android device, MeeGo device or WebOS device, but I haven't yet found any replacements.
I have now had the opportunity to learn more about : HP TouchPad (based on WebOS) and Asus ePad (based on Android), later this year Asus will come with a Eee PC X101 (based on MeeGo)

I think IT IS REALLY HARD TO TELL WHO WILL BE THE WINNER IN THIS WAR between different mobile platforms and development approaches. For me it is not only about building apps to sales as I work as consultant and obviously would like to have more consulting gigs, but were will all the customers be in the future?

Last week I was very pleased when Nokia announce the first MeeGo phone, the Nokia N9. I was not so pleased when Elop told us "there’s no return to MeeGo, even if N9 would be a success”, this sounds very strange to me??

Anyway I have now got more MeeGo Energy with the Nokia N9 so I will go on learning more about MeeGo development and wait and see what happen after Nokia N9, perhaps Elop have to change his mind? I hope so!
I will also go on learn more Android and WebOS development but as a second choose after MeeGo, I can change my mind very fast so you newer know. :-)

I also would like to lend or buy more MeeGo/WebOS/Android devices because I believe I have to play with it for some weeks and test to develop for the platform to really know, so please if you have any spare device I would like to lend it for some weeks!!

Create Apps for Nokia N9 using Qt SDK, part 1

First start to read: Develop for the Nokia N9

The first thing I always do is to install the development tools needed, I found information about it on: Introducing MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan to the Qt SDK. After I had download Qt SDK 1.1.2 and installed it on my Mac, I also need to install the Harmattan target to extend Qt SDK's capabilities to cover the Harmattan platform. I did that by start the "SDKMaintenanceTool" and add "Experimental -Harmattan", but I added everything not included in the default installation. More is better! :-)

Then I start reading about Qt developement on Nokia developer, Qt.
After a while I found: To get started with an application for the Nokia N9 smartphone and the link to: the getting started section of the Harmattan Developer Library.

Now it is time to reading......and do some example code
I wish I only had a Nokia N950, would be great!.
